The murder of four-year-old Mason O’Connell-Conway is one of the most disturbing child abuse cases in modern Irish history. On 13 March 2021, emergency services were called to a home in Rathbane, County Limerick, after it was reported that Mason had fallen from a bunk bed and could not be woken. But what doctors discovered told a very different story. Mason had suffered catastrophic injuries — including severe head trauma and a lacerated liver — injuries that experts said were consistent with sustained abuse, not an accident. Just three days later, on 16 March 2021, Mason died in hospital.
